• What types of accommodations are there on the ranch? Back to Top
We have (6) very comfortable, heated 12'x12' log cabins. Each cabin can accommodate up to 4 guests.
  • Is the ranch fairly accessible by auto? In other words, if someone flies into Albuquerque and rents a vehicle, would they need to rent a 4 WD truck to get to BRR? Back to Top
The ranch is located 29 miles (dirt roads) from the paved highway (hwy 285) and is accessible by auto but, we recommend some sort of high clearance 4WD vehicle... the last 6 miles can be a little rough (bumpy).
  • If we fly our own plane, where is the nearest private airport? Back to Top
There are three airports that accommodates small aircraft... Alamosa, CO, Taos, NM and Santa Fe, NM. Santa Fe and Alamosa have car rental services.
  • Where do we fly into? Back to Top
We recommend you fly into Albuquerque International Airport, Albuquerque NM
  • If someone wanted to target shoot, could they do that at BRR, or would they need to go to location of skeet range? Back to Top
We don't allow any shooting on the ranch when it isn't hunting season (we don't want to scare our elk and mule deer herd) but there are a couple of places near by on Forest land where people go to do some shooting so that isn't an issue.
  • What is the proper amount I should tip my guide/giudes and chef? Back to Top
One of the most commonly asked questions: We all understand that gratuities/tips are strictly at the discretion of the individual. However, our guides and chefs both work very hard to ensure your trip is as successful and memorable as you expect. I like to compare giving gratuities/tips to the staff to giving gratuities/tips to a restaurant waiter/waitress. The expected gratuities/tips for a waiter/waitress in a restaurant is 15%-20% of the cost of your total bill and all they do is serve for 30min to a hour. Our staff serves your needs for your entire stay. With that being said; Hunting guides start at $400.00, Fishing Guides start at $200.00 and cooks starts at $150.00 per client. Remember, this is only an explanation to help you make an informed decision.
  • How long does it take to get to Taos from BRR, or vice versa? Back to Top
It is about 1.5 to 2 hours from the Ranch to Taos, depending on how fast you drive.
  • Do you need chest waders or hip waders? Is the water too cold to wet wade? Back to Top
You can get by with hip waders just fine. Needless to say, earlier in the year when the water levels are higher, you will have to be careful in 1-2 places not to go over hip waders. The water in June can still be quite cold but if the days are warm and you are a hardy sort, you could wet wade.
  • For purposes of physical fitness, about how far is the walking to fishing sites each day? Back to Top
We drive right to the river. The river is in a wide open meadow so the walking is very easy but, if you have folks in your group who can't walk very far, they can still fish in some of the best water near the road. Most of the other spots along the river are within a 5 minute walk from the road with no asending/desending mountains.
  • Can I get cell phone reception or Is there a land telephone line at the ranch or cook house? Back to Top
There is pretty good AT&T cell service rite at the Ranch. There is no land line but people can always contact us up there via cell phone and text messages so contact with "the outside world" is really not an issue.
  • Will I encounter wild animals of the ranch? Back to Top
Yes. There is an amazingly large elk herd and you usually see them in the morning and evening out in the meadows. There are also tons of mule deer and antelope. There are both bald and golden eagles and many types of hawks and falcons. Along the river there are also large colonies of some of the biggest marmots I have ever seen. Along with all of this you will see many other species of birds, foxes, coyotes and maybe a bobcat or two if you are lucky.
  • Have you ever had any encounters with any non-friendly wild animals (bears, mountain lions, etc.)? Back to Top
Over the past 14 years of operation, we have never had a guest that has had an encounter with a non-friendly animal. But, due to the location of the ranch (middle of the Carson National Forest) there may be a slight chance in encountering a non-friendly wild animal. All wild animals are more afraid of us than we are of them and they shouldn't be characterized as either friendly or non-friendly. Basically, a person would have to be in the wrong place at the wrong time and doing something foolish to provoke any wild animal into a dangerous encounter. Also, if you look at the pictures of the Ranch and it's landscape, you will see that it is mostly wide-open alpine meadows. This is not the type of habitat where most bad encounters occur. There is very little cover so a guest at the Ranch won't surprise or corner any wild animals, which is usually at the root of most bad altercations.
  • Does the ranch provide toilet/shower facilities? Back to Top
There are two very nice bathrooms, each with a sink, toilet and shower attached to the main building.
  • If we're fishing, can we keep a few fish to eat? Back to Top
No, we do not allow any fish to be caught for eating.
  • Is all the fishing on the ranch catch and release? Back to Top
All fishing on the Ranch is catch and release using barbless flies...
  • How far is the ranch from Albuquerque? Back to Top
The Ranch is 4hr from Albuquerque, NM
