FLY FISHING ON THE BRAZOS

In Ti Piper's book, Fishing in New Mexico, he says, "...in The Brazos box, above Corkins Lodge and the Brazos River meadows, in the high country, offers fantastic wild trout fishing all on private land. There are browns, brook trout, rainbows and cutthroats in the headwater creeds. In terms of wild populations of naturally reproducing trout, the upper Brazos nurtures the best trout fishery in the state, all on private land." The Ranch joins the Tres Piedras District on the Carson National Forest making a front yard of 354,000 acres uninhabited timberland, sitting on top of a high plateau from 8,000 to nearly 11,000 feet in elevation. Open meadows, rich in wild flowers, are interspersed with stands of pine, spruce, fir and aspen.

Hopewell and Lagunitas are very productive popular fishing lakes in the area along with numerous small streams and rivers. About a mile northeast from the Ranch you find the entrance into the Cruces Basin Wilderness Area. Founded in 1980, this 20,000-acre beauty serves as summer range for large herds of elk and deer. Late fall, huge herds of migrating elk use this corridor traveling to their wintering range fromColorado. There are no roads, homes, and developed campsites, timber cutting or commercial uses allowed. These primitive conditions exist and are preserved for the use, enjoyment and spiritual refreshment for all.
